Trash pick-up collection days changing February 3

Beginning February 3, the trash, recycling, and yard waste collection day on Salt Lake’s Westside (indicated in orange) will move from Friday to Wednesday. Graphic courtesy of Salt Lake City Sustainability.

For the first time in almost 40 years, residential trash pick-up collection days are changing throughout Salt Lake City.

For some Westside residents, this means that collection day – the day when your trash, recycling, and green waste bins are emptied – will move. If you live in the northwestern part of the city and were putting your bins out on Fridays, your new collection day will be Wednesdays. Residents living in the southwestern corner of the city, who were putting their bins out on Thursday, won’t see a change – you’ll still put your bins out on Thursdays.

The city says these changes will allow “staff to better adapt and respond to disruptions due to weather, holidays, and other events throughout the week, ensuring that City residents continue to receive reliable and consistent service.”

The changes won’t affect apartment buildings or businesses with private dumpsters, those who live in the “Thursday zone,” or the Call-2-Haul availability and pick-up. Glass recycling pick-up is also not included in the change day, though residents who participate in the optional glass recycling service may get a new pick-up date from the service provider, Momentum Glass Recycling.

The changes go into effect the week of February 3.

The compost recycling pick-up will be temporarily suspended following the week of January 13 through 17 for a month. Pick-up should return March 3, weather permitting. This yearly pause in service helps Salt Lake City save money and emit fewer emissions as many folks don’t put out the composting bins due to the Winter weather.
